Prob. 1 (20 pts) Multiple choice questions. Circle the correct answer(s).

(1) (2 pts) Which are the two basic types of manufacturing processes: (a) machining operations, (b)
casting operations, (c) processing operations, (d) assembly operations, and (e) marketing operations?

(2) The term “vulcanization” is associated with which one of the following: (a) adhesives, (b) bronze, (c)
fire, (d) rubber, or (e) wood?

(3) A facing operation is normally performed on which one of the following machine tools: (a) drill press,
(b) lathe, (c) milling machine, (d) planer, or (e) shaper?

(4) (2 pts) Typical operations performed on a machining center include which of the following (two best
answers): (a) boring, (b) drilling, (c) milling, (d) sawing, and (e) turning?

(5) (2 pts) In general, ceramics are characterized by which of the following properties (four best answers):
(a) brittleness, (b) chemical inertness, (c) electrically insulating, (d) high electrical conductivity, (e) high
hardness, (f) high thermal conductivity, (g) low density, and (h) low thermal conductivity?

(6) (2 pts) In general, polymers are characterized by which of the following properties (three best answers):
(a) brittleness, (b) chemical inertness, (c) electrically insulating, (d) high electrical conductivity, (e) high
hardness, (f) high thermal conductivity, (g) low density, and (h) low thermal conductivity?

(7) (2 pts) In general, metals are characterized by which of the following properties (three best answers): (a)
brittleness, (b) chemical inertness, (c) electrically insulating, (d) high electrical conductivity, (e) high
hardness, (f) high thermal conductivity, (g) low density, and (h) low thermal conductivity?

(8) If engineering stress and true stress were measured simultaneously during a tensile test, which would
have the higher value: (a) engineering stress or (b) true stress?

1/4

, Write your last name: Solutions

(9) If engineering strain and true strain were measured simultaneously during a tensile test, which would
have the higher value: (a) engineering strain or (b) true strain?

(10) Which one of the following types of stress strain relationship best describes the behavior of brittle
materials such as ceramics and thermosetting plastics: (a) elastic and perfectly plastic, (b) elastic and
strain hardening, (c) perfectly elastic, or (d) none of the above?

(11) (2 pts) Today, the two most important processes in steelmaking are which of the following (two correct
answers): (a) basic oxygen furnace, (b) Bessemer converter, (c) electric arc furnace, (d) induction
furnace, and (e) open hearth furnace?

(12) Liquidmetal and Vitreloy are commercial names of the metal alloys by Liquidmetal Technologies, a
local company. Which one is the Liquidmetal: (a) composite of metal and glass, (b) amorphous metal
alloy, (c) molten metal alloy, (d) mercury, (e) a liquid with metal particles suspended in it?

(13) (2 pts) Compared to thermoplastics, thermosetting polymers are characterized by which of the
following properties (four best answers): (a) cannot be remelted, (b) capable of higher service
temperatures, (c) higher modulus of elasticity, (d) less ductile, (e) lower modulus of elasticity, and (f)
more ductile?

Prob. 2 (20 pts) Short answer questions. Write within the given space.

(1) How does a surface processing operation differ from a shaping process?

Answer. A surface processing operation alters the properties and/or appearance of the surface of the work
(e.g., painting or plating) instead of altering the geometry of the work.

(2) Under what circumstance does the strength coefficient K have the same value as the yield strength Y?

Answer. When the material is perfectly plastic, i.e., does not strain-harden.

(3) Estimate the recrystallization temperature of steel (in ºC). Show your work, i.e., show how you
estimate.

Answer. Melting temperature is around 1300-1400 ºC, which is 1600-1700 K. One half is 800-850 K, which
is 500-600 ºC. (400-700 ºC will be accepted.)
