1.1 Explain the term “language delay” and explain its significance in Early Childhood
Care and Education (ECCE). (4 marks)

Language delay refers to a developmental condition in which a child acquires language
skills at a slower rate than expected for their age. Children with language delays may
experience difficulties in understanding language (receptive language), expressing
themselves verbally (expressive language), or both. Unlike language disorders, where
language development follows an atypical pattern, language delay generally indicates that
the child is progressing through the normal stages of language acquisition but at a
significantly slower pace (Owens, 2020).

In the context of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), language delay is significant
because language forms the foundation for learning, communication, social interaction,
literacy development, and cognitive growth. Early language difficulties can negatively affect
a child's ability to participate in classroom activities, establish relationships with peers, and
develop reading and writing skills. Early identification and intervention are therefore
essential to minimise long-term academic and social challenges (Justice & Redle, 2019).
