Personal Challenges as an ODeL Student at UNISA: Time Management and the Use
of the myUnisa Moodle Platform
As an Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) student at UNISA, one of the greatest challenges I
experience is effective time management. Unlike traditional contact-learning institutions
where students attend scheduled classes, ODeL requires a high level of self-discipline and
independent learning. Balancing academic responsibilities with personal commitments often
makes it difficult for me to follow a consistent study schedule. There have been occasions
when multiple assignments from different modules were due within the same week, creating
significant pressure and forcing me to divide my attention among several tasks at once. As
a result, I sometimes struggle to dedicate sufficient time to researching, planning, and
completing assignments to the best of my ability. Poor time management has also affected
my participation in online discussions and other learning activities because I tend to focus
primarily on urgent assessment deadlines. Furthermore, when assignment deadlines
accumulate, I often have less time available to revise study material thoroughly before
examinations. This creates stress and reduces my confidence during exam preparation. A
practical strategy that lecturers could implement to support students facing time-
management challenges is the provision of structured study plans or weekly learning
schedules for each module. Clear guidance regarding recommended study timelines would
help students distribute their workload more effectively and avoid last-minute preparation.
A second challenge relates to the use of the myUnisa Moodle platform, which serves as the
primary learning management system for ODeL students. Although the platform provides
