What is Hyperkalemia?

Hyperkalemia means there is too much potassium in the bloodstream.

Normal Potassium: 3.5–5.0 mEq/L

Hyperkalemia: Greater than 5.0 mEq/L

Potassium plays a major role in:

• Muscle contraction

• Nerve conduction

• Heart rhythm regulation

When potassium levels become elevated, the heart is the organ most at risk.



Common Causes of Hyperkalemia
Increased Intake

• Excess potassium supplements

• Salt substitutes containing potassium

• Excessive IV potassium administration

Decreased Excretion

• Kidney failure

• Acute kidney injury

• Adrenal insufficiency
