Understanding Hypercalcemia

What Is Hypercalcemia?

Hypercalcemia occurs when the calcium level in the blood rises above the normal range, usually
greater than 10.5 mg/dL. Calcium is important for muscle contraction, nerve function, blood
clotting, and bone health. When calcium becomes too high, many body systems begin to slow
down.

Quick Memory Tip

"Too much calcium = everything moves slower."

Think:

• Slow bowels

• Slow thinking

• Slow muscles

• Slow reflexes

Common Causes of Hypercalcemia

Endocrine Causes

• Hyperparathyroidism

• Excess parathyroid hormone (PTH)

Cancer-Related Causes

• Bone metastasis

• Malignancies that release PTH-related proteins

Medication Causes

• Thiazide diuretics

• Excess calcium supplements
