Question 1: Early Social Relationships and Their Influence on Social and
Emotional Development
Introduction
Early social relationships are fundamental to children's social and emotional
development. From infancy, interactions with caregivers shape children's ability to trust
others, regulate emotions and form healthy relationships. Developmental theories
suggest that early experiences influence later behaviour, self-concept and emotional
wellbeing. This discussion critically examines how early social relationships influence
social and emotional development through the evolutionary psychology perspective,
attachment theory and Erikson's psychosocial theory, while considering relevant
research findings.
Early Social Relationships and Socioemotional Development
Socioemotional development refers to changes in emotions, personality, relationships
and social functioning throughout life (Louw & Louw, 2022). The first relationships that
children form, usually with parents or primary caregivers, provide the foundation for
emotional security and social learning. Through consistent and responsive caregiving,
children learn to manage emotions, develop empathy and build positive expectations
about relationships.
Positive early relationships contribute to emotional competence, self-confidence and
social adjustment. In contrast, inconsistent or neglectful caregiving may increase the
risk of emotional insecurity, behavioural difficulties and poor social functioning.
Research indicates that supportive caregiver-child interactions promote emotional
regulation and healthy social development, highlighting the importance of secure early
relationships (Thompson, 2019).
