Project Planning
When organizations propose and seek approval for projects, they must clearly demonstrate
how the project aligns with fundamental business objectives and organizational goals. Business
requirements outline how the project will contribute to the organization’s goals and values,
increase profitability, and minimize environmental impact. These requirements are commonly
organized within a formal requirements document to ensure consistency and easy access
throughout the project lifecycle. As Michele Maritato explains, business requirements “describe
the needs of the organization as a whole” and define “the business value that the project should
deliver” (Maritato, 2013).
ECO-Trans specializes in driver-assistance solutions for the mass transit industry. Its
software product, ECO-Stream, processes operational data to generate recommendations that
enhance routing efficiency, decrease fuel cost, and strengthen schedule adherence (MindEdge,
2025). Sunshine Rail Transport (SRT) selected ECO-Trans to implement ECO-Stream across 53
locomotives. An essential factor in the project’s success is SRT’s capacity to convey accurate
business requirements to ECO-Trans. Within the project structure, John Schaller functions as
SRT’s project sponsor and is responsible for presenting the company’s business requirements to
Astrid Varga, the ECO-Trans project manager. Varga is responsible for translating those
requirements into actionable guidance for the organization to ensure the project is delivered in
accordance with contractual expectations, timeline constraints, and budget limitations.
Stakeholder requirements were collected through several data-gathering processes, including
interviews, questionnaires, phone conversations, and spreadsheet-based feedback collection
(MindEdge, 2025). The finalized requirements are presented in the table below:
