Kaldor New and Old Wars:
Argues that war is different as a result of processes of globalization and says that
war now has economic rather than political motives --> also talks about identity
politics, changes in concepts of state sovereignty, changes in modes of warfare
Critiques of Kaldor war isnt inherently new - if anything its a return to pre-clausewitzian form of
warfare
M Van Creveld The Transformation of War
argues that nuclear capabilities have created the first time governments have
created a weapon they actively try not to use. Also argues that nuclear deterrence
isnt a threat in low level conflicts and because it is difficult to translate nuclear
power into political benefits --> Because you can't use nuclear power without
ending the world first
Berdal The "New Wars Thesis" revisited
War is different in the goals of the belligerents, the mode of warfare, and in the
way they are being financed - argues that one has to look at the history, also
critiques that Kaldor only focuses on Europe and not Africa - Africa's new wars
have old roots (Congo for ex. have roots in colonial and pre-colonial era)

Newman The New Wars Debate: a historical perspective is needed
argues that Kaldor's thesis puts too much emphasis on how contemporary
conflicts are the same and not how they are different --> agrees with globalization
as a factor--- argues that historical context isn't included in the analysis because if
it were, it would show that the current form of warfare is not completely new and
that it may be seen as new because analysts are now focusing on factors not
focused on previously
Newman's examples Bosnian Civil War: New war because fighting caused human displacement, there
were human rights violations, ethnic cleansing, paramilitary groups,
national/ethnic identity politics driving the conflict
(Burundi, Sierra Leone, Chechnya, Somalia, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Liberia, Congo,
Angola all exhibited some of these factors)
Ullman Shock and Awe: achieving rapid dominance
Paret Napoleon and the Revolution in war
New methods: big army, --> social, political and military elements allowed them to
be successful
The French Revolution coincided with a revolution in War -
- Universal conscription
- armies faster and more mobile
- strategies had explicit political goals
