UNIT 1 — EMPLOYMENT
fringe benefits = Perks received in addition to a salary (e.g., company car, private health insurance).
work-life balance = The equilibrium between an individual’s professional and personal life.
to propagate = To spread or promote an idea, belief, or practice widely.
resilient = Able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions.
to achieve = To successfully bring about or reach a desired objective through effort.
to obtain = To get, acquire, or secure something.
traineeship = A period of structured training within a company, similar to an internship.
founder = A person who establishes an organization, company, or business.
fashion hub = A city or geographic center recognized as a major focus for the fashion industry.
salary = A fixed regular payment, typically paid on a monthly basis, for professional work.
c-level (CFO, CEO, etc.) = High-ranking executive titles where the 'C' stands for 'Chief' (e.g., Chief
Executive Officer).
monetary = Relating to money or currency.
to trigger = To cause an event or situation to happen or exist.
opportunity = A time or set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something advantageous.
zero-to-one stage = The initial phase of a startup where a business goes from nothing to creating
something entirely new.
to be let go = A polite euphemism for being dismissed or fired from employment.
to be retrenched = To be laid off from a job because an employer is cutting back costs or restructuring.
to terminate (a contract) = To bring a legal, working agreement to an official end.
to eviscerate = To deprive something of its essential content, strength, or force.
to transition = To change or move from one state, position, or style to another.
to revolutionize = To fundamentally and radically change something (e.g., an industry or process).

without grounds = Lacking a legal or factual basis; unjustified.
a colleague = A co-worker; someone you work alongside in a professional environment.
to employ = To give work to someone and pay them for it.
un /employment = The state of having a paid job / The state of being jobless while actively seeking
work.

the work.

permanent/temporary employment/work = An open-ended employment contract / Work meant to last
only for a specific, limited period.
long-term/regular employment/work = Stable work spanning over a long period / Consistent, routine
work.
continuous employment/work = An unbroken period of employment with the same employer, often
relevant for legal rights.
self-employed = Working for oneself as a freelancer or business owner rather than for an employer.
full employment = An economic situation where all available labor resources are being used in the most
efficient way possible (virtually zero involuntary unemployment).
portfolio work/worker/ working = A style of working where an individual holds multiple part-time jobs
or freelance clients simultaneously rather than a single full-time role.
portfolio career = A career path defined by managing a variety of parallel roles or freelance projects.
side hustle = A secondary job or business run by an individual in addition to their primary full-time job to
earn extra income.
discretionary spending = Non-essential spending on wants rather than needs (e.g., luxury items,
vacations).
to reorient = To change the focus, direction, or emphasis of something.
to be tasked = To be assigned a specific piece of work or duty to complete.
to land (a message) = To successfully communicate an idea so that it is understood and accepted by an
audience.
to entice/enticing = To attract by offering reward or pleasure / Alluring and attractive.
workforce = The total number of people available for work or currently employed in a nation, industry,
or company.
to underscore = To emphasize or bring attention to something crucial.
in the aftermath of = In the period of time following a major, usually destructive, event.
competitive set = A group of direct competitors that offer similar products or services.
pensions = Regular payments made during a person's retirement from an investment fund they (and/or
their employer) contributed to.

to reverberate = To have a prolonged or continuing impact or echo through a community or industry.
paradigm shift = A fundamental change in approach, mindset, or underlying assumptions.
gig economies = Labor markets characterized by the prevalence of short-term contracts or freelance
work as opposed to permanent jobs.
creator economies = The business landscape driven by independent content creators (influencers,
writers, video makers) who monetize their skills online.
asymmetries = Imbalances or inequalities between two parties (e.g., information asymmetry where one
party knows more than another).
to monetize = To convert an asset, activity, or content into a source of revenue.
to eclipse = To obscure, surpass, or become much more significant than something else.
to poach = To illegally or unfairly take something, such as secretly recruiting a competitor's top
employees.

leadership = The action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do so.
skills (often used in the plural) = Specific, learned proficiencies required to perform a job effectively
(e.g., coding languages).
qualities (personal) = Inherent personal traits or characteristics (e.g., patience, integrity).
experience = Knowledge or skill gained over time through hands-on work in a specific field.
hands-on = Involving direct, practical, and active participation rather than theoretical study.
contract = A legally binding agreement between an employer and employee.
