, SECTION A: LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND LANGUAGE LEARNING

Question 1
Explain the difference between language acquisition and language learning.

Answer

Language acquisition refers to the natural and unconscious process through which people
develop language skills by interacting with others in meaningful situations. It usually happens
through communication, listening, observation, and social interaction. Children acquire their
home language naturally without formal instruction.

Language learning, on the other hand, is a conscious and formal process where learners study the
rules and structures of a language. It normally takes place in classrooms through activities such
as grammar exercises, spelling, reading, and writing.

Language acquisition focuses on communication and fluency, while language learning focuses
on accuracy and understanding language rules.

Question 2
What is meant by the “critical period” in language acquisition?

Answer

The critical period refers to the stage in human development during which language acquisition
happens most easily and naturally. Researchers believe that young children learn languages
faster and with better pronunciation than older learners because their brains are more flexible and
adaptable.

After this period, usually after puberty, learning a new language becomes more difficult. Adults
can still learn additional languages, but they may struggle with pronunciation and fluency
compared to children.

Question 3
Explain how a teacher’s beliefs about language acquisition influence classroom teaching.
