Advanced Professional Nurse as Advocate
Domain 3 of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is concerned
with Population Health; it is required that the advanced practice nurse offer hands-on and
systemic level interventions to produce better outcomes (AACN, 2021).
Competency 1: Epidemiologic and population information to eliminate disparities.
Quality nurses understand surveillance information, neighbourhood health surveys, and
environmental trends for the purpose of identifying the high-risk groups and distributing
resources equally. In Davidson County, Tennessee, county-level data indicate elevated adult
obesity prevalence and low fruit and vegetable consumption (University of Wisconsin
Population Health Institute [UWPHI], 2024). An advanced professional nurse can use this data to
denote an audience for a Healthy Food Prescription Program (HFPP) in the high-burden
communities. With the help of data analytics, the model of care delivery no longer revolves
around reactive care delivery but rather proactive care delivery on a population-based level.
Competency 2: Social justice, Interprofessional collaboration, and policy advocacy.
Domain 3 is further important in helping nurses collaborate cross-sectoral and help create
legislate to improve structural determinants of health (AACN, 2021). An example of this is as a
chairperson of a coalition of public health officials, dietitians, agricultural partners, and policy
makers to implement a countywide HFPP addressing economic and environmental barriers to
healthy eating. These competencies promote the health of the population since they do not focus
