NURSING 305 Pharmacological Flashcards for Rachael Heidebrink; CASE STUDY, Already Graded-MEDICATION: Hydrocodone bitartrate-acetaminophen CLASSIFICATION: Opioid analgesics PROTOTYPE: Opioid analgesics SAFE DOSE OR DOSE RANGE, SAFE ROUTE: PO 1 to 2 tablets every 4 hours as needed PURPOSE FOR TAKING THIS MEDICATION: Moderate to severe pain PATIENT EDUCATION WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION: • Advise patient that hydrocodone is a drug with abuse potential. • Protect it from theft, and never give to anyone other than the individual for whom it was prescribed. • Medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness. • Advise patient to call for assistance when ambulating or smoking. Caution patient to avoid driving or other activities requiring alertness until response to medication is known. ADVERSE EFFECTS • Pruritus • Urinary retention • Vomiting • Constipation • Headache • Somnolence CONTRAINDICATIONS • Respiratory depression airways disease • acute hepatic disease • head injuries • coma • convulsive disorders • patients with known hydrocodone and acetaminophen sensitivity
