, MODULE 1.1
All about ICT
THE ROLE OF ICT IN THE WORKPLACE
WITH THE HELP OF ICT WE CAN:
• Work where we have access to a computer
• More effective communication with workers and clients
• Store and process large amounts of data, which can help us make faster and more
informed decisions
• New trends and tendencies
• Repetitive actions are performed faster and with the same effort
• Performing tasks that are not easy/safe for people to perform

NEGATIVE IMPACT OF ICT IN THE WORKPLACE
• Requires regular upgrading of skills, hardware, and software
• Causes job losses
• ICT workers work longer hours to meet client expectations

THE COMPUTER
Computers take input (from mouse/keyboard), do something with it (processing), and give
output on screen

THE POWER OF A COMPUTER IS DETERMINED BY:
• CPU power
• Amount of storage space and the type (HDD/SSD)
• Type of graphics card

PORTABLE COMPUTERS
LAPTOPS
• Use smaller components for lower power consumption and use battery power
• More expensive than desktop computer for the same specification
• Power consumption settings to manage power consumption

TABLETS
• Pen-sensitive screen that you can use with your finger
• Ideal for quick, small-scale computing
• Mobile operating systems and batteries live longer than laptops

Phablet:
• Cell phones with a screen size larger than 5 inches
• Tablet functions but can make calls

, Hybrid laptop/tablets:
• Touchscreen with scanners
• Screen can rotate 360 and lie flat/ the screen can be removed
• More powerful than conventional tablets and includes full desktop operating system
• CONS: weighs more, shorter battery life, usually no built-in cellular communication

SMARTPHONES
• Is an example of convergence because a phone combines the features and technology of
a wide variety of devices
• All smartphones have the following
• N operating system / large color screens / one or 2 cameras

SERVERS AND CLIENTS
SERVER
• provide services/resources to clients
• more powerful than client computers

CLIENTS
• less powerful than servers (less space and processing power)
• receive services/resources from server

PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION
WHY YOU SHOULD PROTECT INFORMATION
• Data may not have been backed up and could be lost.
• Information is private/sensitive

PROTECTING HARDWARE FROM THEFT
• Mark computer cases, enclosures and other components with ultraviolet pen
• Insurance companies look for serial numbers of all hardware
• Use special hidden security software that activates when thief uses internet

HOW TO PREVENT HARDWARE FROM BEING STOLEN
• Use devices to secure equipment to immovable objects
• Lock system units/computer cases of computers or servers in cabinets
• Install motion sensors connected to an alarm

UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY (UPS)
• A generator can be used, but if the power suddenly goes out, work will be lost/data on
the hard drive may become corrupted.
• A UPS can be used to protect a computer from power outages.
• If the power goes out, the UPS will kick in immediately and provide power for a short
period of time.
