QMS ROADWAY EXAM QUESTIONS AND
ANSWERS 2026 VERIFIED.

Asphalt pavements are composed of three basic components - ANS 1) Asphalt
2) Aggregates
3) Air Voids

Aggregates classified into two groups - ANS Coarse and fine

Aggregates normally constitute what percent of total mixture? - ANS 90 to 96%

The most important but overlooked component of an asphalt mix is - ANS Air voids

Common types of asphalts - ANS -Dense graded
-Warm-mix Asphalt
-Open-Graded Asphalt Friction Course; Permeable Asphalt Drainage Course
-Ultra-thin bonded Wearing Course
-Asphalt Surface Treatements
-Emulsified Asphalt Mixes(Cold Mixes)

Mineral Aggregate - ANS Acts as a stone framework to impart strength and toughness to the
system.

,Asphalt binder - ANS Typically solid to semisolid at normal temperatures and becomes a
liquid at high temperatures. Asphalt is made up largely of a hydrocarbon called bitumen and
therefore is often called a bituminous material.

Asphalt Binder - ANS Is an excellent waterproofing material

Pavements constructed of asphalt binder mix are typically designed based on traffic projections
over - ANS a 20 year period

The subgrade ultimately carries all traffic loads; therefore, the structural function of a pavement
is to - ANS support a wheel load on the pavement surface and transfer and spread that load
to the subgrade, without over-taxing either the strength of the subgrade or the internal strength
of the pavement itself.

In determining pavement thickness, the following factors are considered: - ANS 1) Traffic
2)Soil Support Value
3) Regional Factor
4) Strength and other influencing characteristics of the materials available
5) Economics

An asphalt pavement structure consists of all courses or layers above the prepared subgrade or
foundation. The upper or top layer(s) is the asphalt - ANS surface course

The layer placed immediately below the surface course is the - ANS intermediate course

When the expected traffic is very high or other conditions dictate - ANS an asphalt base
course may be utilized

The base is also - ANS -high density material and is made using an even larger maximum size
aggregate

, The base is - ANS -an important structural strength element of a pavement

The first letter of the mix type designation indicates - ANS type of mix(Surface, Intermediate
and Base)

The number indicates - ANS the nominal aggregate size in millimeters

The letter at the end indicates - ANS the level of traffic loading which the mix is designated to
carry with satisfactory performance

Traffic loading is expressed in - ANS ESAL(Equivalent Single Axle Loads)

Example of ESAL - ANS S 12.5C

S12.5C mix compenents - ANS S- Surface
12.5mm and design loading of 3 to 30 million ESAL
Produces PG 70-22 asphalt binder

Minimum layer thickness is at least - ANS 3 times the nominal maximum aggregate size

Characteristics considered in mix design - ANS -Permanent deformation(rutting) resistance
-Durability
-Flexibility
-Fatigue resistance
-skid resistance
-impermeability
-workability and economics
