A. Discuss-how-ONE-historic,-legislative,-social,-or-economic-event-impacted-the-growth-of-
your-chosen-hospital:
Ascension-Sacred-Heart-Hospital-of-Pensacola-has-provided-healthcare-services-to-children-in-
the-communities-of-Northwest-Florida-and-South-Alabama-for-over-50-years.-However,-the-
facility-lacked-the-space-to-accommodate-everyone's-needs.-For-the-services-it-was-unable-to-
provide,-children-were-referred-to-children's-hospitals.-According-to-Quint-Studer,-Pensacola-
News-Journal-(2019),-children-require-special-needs,-and-receiving-reimbursement-for-these-
services-is-challenging.-Subsequently,-the-number-of-children's-hospitals-are-predominately-
located-in-"large-metropolitan-areas-and-on-the-campus-of-a-teaching-hospital-because-medical-
students,-interns,-and-residents-are-readily-available."-Therefore,-reducing-the-cost-of-services.
This-socially-presented-an-unnecessary-burden-for-the-families-in-the-local-community.-With-
the-nearest-children's-hospital-over-250-miles-away-in-Birmingham,-"a-chronically-ill-kid-that-
needs-to-be-in-a-children's-hospital-bed-often-means-you-have-to-break-the-family-apart"-
(Ascension-Sacred-Heart-Foundation,-2020b).-"In-2015,-Susan-Davis,-the-former-CEO-of-
Sacred-Heart-Health-System,"-envisioned-a-children's-hospital-built-in-the-Pensacola-area.-As-
Quint-Studer,-Pensacola-News-Journal-(2019)-continues,-with-"over-30-years-in-healthcare,"-
financially,-he-could-not-see-how-it-would-be-feasible.-However,-Susan-was-determined.-
"Ascension-has-put-in-$55-million-with-$30-million-coming-from-local-and-national-donors--
investors-in-saving-children's-lives."-Per-Ascension-Sacred-Heart-Foundation-(2020b),-On-May-

4,-2019,-the-Studer-Family-Children's-Hospital-was-opened.-I-did-not-expect-to-personally-be-
impacted-by-the-opening-of-the-children's-hospital-working-on-this-paper.
My-14-year-old-son-has-always-been-thin-framed.-Because-he-was-born-at-32-weeks-gestation,-
I-was-not-concerned.-As-an-infant,-the-providers-at-Vanderbilt-Children's-Hospital-in-Nashville,-
TN.,-informed-me-of-him-having-a-heart-murmur.-I-was-told-not-to-worry-about-it-because-it-
will-likely-resolve-without-any-intervention.-At-the-age-of-3,-he-started-wearing-eyeglasses.-
Again,-I-was-not-concerned-because-my-father,-brother,-and-I-wear-eyeglasses.-Throughout-the-
years,-he-continued-to-struggle-with-weight-gain.-My-mom-often-made-comments-regarding-his-
weight.-Because-I-lived-6-hours-away-in-Nashville,-TN.,-she-feared-I-was-prideful-and-not-
asking-for-financial-assistance,-causing-him-not-to-be-fed.-I-tried-to-assure-her-I-would-not-let-
my-pride-prevent-me-from-feeding-my-children.-To-give-herself-peace-of-mind,-she-would-
make-deposits-in-my-bank-account.-I-kept-expressing-my-mother's-concerns-to-his-medical-
providers.-With-negative-test-results,-his-providers-would-advise-a-high-protein-diet.-In-May-
2018,-my-children-and-I-relocated-to-Pensacola,-Florida,-to-be-closer-to-my-parents.-
A-few-weeks-ago,-my-mother-again-expressed-her-concerns-regarding-MyKell's-weight.-To-
help-alleviate-her-concerns,-I-made-him-an-appointment-to-see-Dr.-Stanley-Barnes-in-
Evergreen,-Alabama.-For-decades,-he-has-provided-healthcare-for-my-family.-I-knew-if-he-
medically-cleared-MyKell,-my-mom-would-finally-leave-me-alone-regarding-his-weight.-On-
November-3rd,-MyKell-had-his-appointment.-Within-minutes-of-meeting-him,-Dr.-Barnes-tells-
me-he-thinks-MyKell-may-have-a-rare-inherited-disorder-called-Marfan-Syndrome.-For-a-
definitive-diagnosis,-my-son-will-have-to-undergo-a-series-of-tests-with-multiple-specialists-at-a-
children's-hospital.-As-a-single-mother-to-5-year-old-and-14-year-old-boys,-juggling-full-time-
work-and-school,-I-wondered:-Will-I-be-able-to-do-this-without-neglecting-my-other-
responsibilities?-Will-I-be-able-to-afford-to-pay-what-insurance-won't-cover?-Will-my-son-
receive-high-quality-care-if-I-am-not-able-to-afford-the-care-he-will-need?-With-the-extension-of-
