Europian studies project “Corona Rellen”
After the “Avondklok” was introduced by the Dutch government, protests and riots started all over
the country. Sunday Afternoon there were demonstrations against the Corona policy. In for example
Amsterdam it was a peaceful protest until the ME cleared the Museumplein. People started to resist
and this let to violence against the police. In Eindhoven there were mostly rioters who started to
vandalize train stations and shops. I think it is important to make a difference between Peaceful
Protesters against a government policy and between rioters who always try to find an excuse to
destroy their cities. So I think it should be helpful to talk to these protestors and listen serious to
them. If they are not allowed to protest I ask myself the question, it seems like we are not living in an
democracy anymore
Mostly young people where these night on the street during the riots. We as young people are
suffering from the corona rules during the most developing fase of our live, we want to party, go on
trips, learn new thing explore the world and now we are all locked op in our rooms and are following
half asleep the online lessons, and now with the “Avondklok” we have also last our small parties in
the evening which I think are very important for your social developing. More and more Young
people are suffering of the Lockdown. I think the “Avondklok” was the ‘’druppel die de emmer deed
overlopen”. Of course it is not the right way to respond with looting and rioting, But you can also ask
yourself: What can I do to stop these rules. The answer is very simple, NOTHING. I think that most
young people feel lost and powerless. We just have to accept rules and we don’t have influence on
them. Most people feel forgotten and started to create attention by doing these horrible lootings.
These lootings were for some local companies a nightmare, especially during these times.
I think the Dutch government should be taking into a count that a lot of people are done with the
rules and that they now start to resist after almost one year. To keep support base for new rules
ministers should take mental health into a count to make the new rules. Otherwise if these crisis is
over the difference in our society will be greater than ever before.
