Preliminary Phase Practice Assignment
Introduction
The case study involving Maria Rodriquez and her two children, Juan, age five, and
Alena, age four, is a difficult story for all parties involved. Ms. Rodriquez is faced with multiple
challenges, including being alienated from her own parents and family from Mexico, coming to
the United States (U.S.) illegally with a man who decided to leave her and their two children for
an American woman. Ms. Rodriquez supports her two children, but she is faced with many
obstacles as she can only work low-wage jobs to keep her undocumented status hidden from
Immigration Services. These circumstances make her unable to afford adequate childcare and
proper nutrition for her young children. Ms. Rodriquez is having to work longer hours to make
enough money to support her family, leaving her exhausted and unable to keep up with the daily
duties of cleanliness, causing unsanitary and potential health hazards. As we prepare to meet Ms.
Rodriquez, our goal is to identify her specific obstacles by offering tailored support in order to
establish the best outcome while simultaneously understanding her feelings and cultural
considerations.
Who, What, Where
While reflecting on Ms. Rodriquez’s story and preparing for the initial meeting, I find
that our approach will allow us to concisely identify the immediate needs and come up with a
plan that makes Ms. Rodriquez feel optimistic about the future. In the initial meeting, we will
meet at Ms. Rodriquez’s home. Attending the meeting will be Ms. Rodriquez, Mr. Garcia (the
landlord), as well as the two children, Juan and Alena. After I have had the opportunity to meet
everyone, I would request that Mr. Garcia take Juan and Alena to play while Ms. Rodriquez and
I get an opportunity to talk further. Next, Mr. Garcia will come back with Juan and Alena for the
