QUESTION 1: Strategies for Managing Work-Related Stress

Introduction

Work-related stress has become one of the most significant psychological and
organisational challenges affecting employees globally. According to the scenario
provided, the employee experienced persistent worry, emotional exhaustion, sleep
disturbances, social withdrawal, and difficulty separating work responsibilities from
personal life. These symptoms are common indicators of occupational stress and
burnout, particularly in demanding work environments where employees experience
prolonged pressure and insufficient recovery time. Work stress negatively affects
employee wellbeing, productivity, interpersonal relationships, and organisational
performance. Recent studies indicate that unmanaged stress contributes to anxiety,
depression, absenteeism, decreased motivation, and high employee turnover (World
Health Organization [WHO], 2023).

Researchers have increasingly emphasized the importance of implementing effective
stress management strategies within organisations and at an individual level. Modern
workplaces are characterised by technological demands, heavy workloads, role
ambiguity, job insecurity, and work-life imbalance, all of which contribute to increased
stress among employees (International Labour Organization [ILO], 2024).
Consequently, organisations are encouraged to adopt proactive interventions that
support psychological wellbeing and create healthier work environments. Effective
stress management strategies not only improve employee mental health but also
enhance organisational commitment, productivity, and job satisfaction.

This discussion examines several evidence-based strategies for managing work-related
stress. The strategies discussed include work-life balance, time management, employee
wellness programmes, social support, mindfulness and relaxation techniques, physical
exercise, counselling and psychological support, flexible working arrangements,
leadership support, and stress management training. Recent literature published
between 2023 and 2026 is used to support the discussion and practical examples are
included to demonstrate how these strategies can be applied in workplace settings.

1. Work-Life Balance

One of the most effective strategies for managing work-related stress is maintaining a
healthy work-life balance. Work-life balance refers to the ability of employees to
effectively manage both work responsibilities and personal life commitments without
experiencing excessive pressure or conflict. Employees who spend excessive time
working often experience emotional exhaustion, fatigue, and burnout. Poor work-life
balance also reduces opportunities for relaxation and recovery, thereby increasing
psychological distress (Chen & Roberts, 2024).

Organisations can promote work-life balance by encouraging reasonable working hours,
limiting overtime, and allowing employees sufficient leave periods. Employees should
