, OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this unit the student will be able to:
• Identify the incidence, etiology, pathophysiology and clinical manifestation of
burn injury.
• Calculate total body surface area total body surface area (TBSA) burned.
• Calculate resuscitation needs and medication dosages for clients with burns.
• Prioritize care for the patient with burns during the resuscitation, acute, and
rehabilitation phases of burn in jury to preserve tissue integrity, fluid and
electrolyte balance, and gas exchange

, SKIN FACTS
• The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total area of about 20 square feet.
• The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates
our skin tone.
• The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles,
and sweat glands.
• The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue.
• The skin’s color is created melanocytes located in the epidermis.
