Maternal-Child Nursing
Study Guide – Exam 1 Review

Describe current trends/resources influencing maternal-child healthcare
1. Women’s roles
 Have changed- more women are working now and not stay at home mothers
 No longer the “nuclear family”- divorce, remarriages, cohabitation, women entering
workforce and becoming primary earners. Children raised by grandparents, single
parents, stepparents, aunts, uncles, and foster parents
 Single family structures- both parent and child show increased resilience
 Those who would rather put their career first vs those that dream of becoming a mother
2. Trends
 Community growth
 Home births
o More of a say/voice, birth plan
o Parent voicing concerns
 Maternal age
o Increasing
o Increased age = increased risk, genetics, Down’s syndrome,
co-morbidities/chronic disease
 Infant mortality
o Racial disparity
o All mothers need care
 Maternal mortality rates
o Increasing
o Gestational hypertension
 Dying due to high blood pressure
