CNA 8.7.1 (Ostomy) Questions with
Answers
Ostomy - correct answer: An ostomy is a procedure in which a surgical opening is made into the
body. The artificial opening is called a stoma.

Ostomies are named for the part of the body involved. For example, a colostomy involves an
opening through the abdominal wall into the colon. And an ileostomy involves an opening
through the abdominal wall into the part of the small intestine known as the ileum.

Purpose of an Ostomy - correct answer: The ostomy allows wastes to be expelled through the
opening. A bag or pouch is placed over the stoma to collect the waste. The pouch is held in
place by a belt or an adhesive seal.

Common reasons to perform an ostomy include:

- Cancer

- Bowel disease

- Trauma, such as stab wounds or bullet wounds

For some patients, the ostomy is permanent. But for other patients, an ostomy may be
temporary. In these cases, the ostomy is done in order to allow diseased or injured tissue time
to heal. Once the healing occurs, the ostomy is repaired, and normal elimination is restored.

Sensitivity to ostomy - correct answer: Because patients with ostomies are unable to eliminate
body wastes in a normal manner, they may experience negative emotions. They may sense a
loss of dignity and control, which can lead to low self-esteem and withdrawal from social
activities. And they may feel depressed, anxious, embarrassed, or angry.

The assistant can help the patient adjust to the ostomy.

, - Allow the patient to do as much of the ostomy care as possible. As a result, the patient can
gain confidence and independence.

- Avoid facial expressions and body language that show reactions to the body waste.

- Be understanding and supportive, and allow patients to express their thoughts and fears.

Providing ostomy care - correct answer: Ostomy care should be provided every time the patient
has a bowel movement. The care may involve emptying and cleaning the bag or changing the
bag and applying a new skin barrier. In addition to proper cleaning, deodorants may be put into
the bag to help prevent odor.

Skin care is a very important part of ostomy care. If feces come in contact with the skin,
breakdown can occur. Also, the adhesives used to prevent leakage can sometimes irritate the
skin. Assistants should clean and dry the patient's skin around the stoma. And they should
observe the skin for redness, rash, or breakdown.

Prepare for procedure - correct answer: Prepare for Procedure

- Knock on the door before entering the room.

- Address the patient by name and introduce yourself.

- Identify the patient by checking the identification bracelet.

- Provide the patient with privacy.

- Explain the procedure to the patient.

Gather materials - correct answer: Gather Materials

- Cleanse your hands.

- Gather the supplies for the procedure. You will need:

- Bed protector

- Bath blanket
