Safety and quality outcomes hinge on nurses' ability to notice deterioration, interpret
significance, and respond appropriately. The Next Generation NCLEX and the Clinical
Judgment Measurement Model now measure to improve patient safety.
Integrating Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences into a mentoring program provides
individualized coaching. Mentors can tailor learning modalities while ensuring Multiple
Intelligences as a flexible framework for teaching and feedback.
The Importance of Understanding Multiple Intelligences
Multiple Intelligences challenges the notion of a single, uniform intelligence. Multiple
Intelligences reframes Intelligence as diverse, avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach that
overlooks a learner's strengths and weaknesses. Multiple Intelligences offers how to teach, while
the NCJMM and Tanner define what to teach. While working in the surgery department, I
trained nurses with different learning styles. I trained some nurses who wanted me to do a whole
procedure (see one, do one), and then I had other nurses who tried to do everything hands-on
themselves, with only standby assistance. Regarding computer skills, I found that some nurses
wanted me to tell them what to do and let them control the computer, while others wanted me to
write everything down and do the task myself.
