DUN1 — DUN1 Task 1: Professional Development Plan

A. Develop your five-year professional development plan by addressing short,
intermediate, and long-term goals:
Short-term (one-year) goal: My short-term goal is to complete my BSN within the year.
With my new degree, I plan on progressing in my career, transitioning into a leadership
role. I will be starting a new job, and I want to join their shared governance committee.
At a previous job where I was employed, I was co-chair of the facility nurse practice
council. I played a role in improving the quality of care and patient safety, while
promoting equitable opportunities for shared decision-making and accountability. My
intention is to join a shared governance committee at my new job, which I will start
shortly, to become involved in promoting the facility’s policies and empowering staff
nurses and leadership.
Intermediate (three-year) goal: One of my intermediate goals is to take a pause before
continuing to complete my MSN degree. With this degree, I plan to transition from
bedside nursing to a focus on nursing education. I would like to become an adjunct
professor at a school of nursing while working as a director at a hospital.
Long-term (5-year) goal: My long-term goal is to continue implementing my
intermediate goals and to open my own home health agency. I have family that needed to
utilize home health services, and I observed many areas for improvement. I aim to
provide exceptional care for patients who are medically cleared for discharge from the
hospital but still require ongoing medical services.
2. Discuss the requirements needed to maintain your current certificates or
certifications:
Currently, I hold certifications in BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS. BLS (Basic Life Support)
certification teaches healthcare professionals how to perform high-quality CPR, use an
AED, and perform team-based resuscitation for adults, children, and infants. The four-
hour course is offered through various modalities, including in-person, blended learning
(a combination of online and skills sessions), or a full-classroom course. Once the written
assessment has been passed, a certificate is issued, valid for two years; after this period, a
renewal is required (BLS-ACLS, n.d.).
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) expands BLS skills and advanced
procedures like defibrillation and EKG analysis to teach healthcare professionals how to
manage cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies. To receive certification, one
