Regenerative design_Lesson 1
He had a discussion with an expert of climate who was moving. Several millions of people are living
near the coast line and what should or can we do?
A building without a shading system is bad architecture, because it is not livable and and it is essential
to live in the building. Today we rely on our intuition, but our intuition is not enough. We approach
projects differently and arrive completely different solutions, and that is the goal of the course. We as
architects make many decisions and we are not orinary inhabitants. We are invited to become part of
the solution and not staying part oft he problem. It is really important to look at the harsh reality.
Always ask yourself, is your design ready fort he future or is it already outdated. We have lost a lot of
time so it is now about how we can make a difference and who do we want to be as a designer.

The red zone are the harsh facts. We are all staying in the red zone because it is easy and we do not
have to think about solutions.

1.10 Sustainability is not enough
A good architecture must provide direct contact with daylight and nature.
Noah Berger is a photographer, who follows climate change situations.
We have the responsibility to consider the impact of our work on the environment. We have to look
at the facts, even if they are uncomfortable to accept and must draw conclusions based on the
evidence and act accordingly. Deny the reality oft he situation is a luxury we no longer have and it is
no longer available. The effects of the climate change are already visible like the rising sea level, the
extreme weather events and the loss of biodiversity. We as architects have the unique opportunity to
make a difference and to help creating a better future.
The idea of the course is to listen to different sources:

Hit with far greater firocity than anyone ever expected. Our once stable planet is going to look
unrecognizable. At 1.2°C we are in danger of entering the tipping points in five major systems.
It is now likely that we will reach 1.5°C warming by the 2030s. At this point we could cross
tipping points in five more systems. The current politics are working that we reach 2.6°C by
2100. At this point we enter the danger zone for major disruption oft he african monsson and
for the amazone rainforest.

When we cross tipping points, we cross irreversible change.
Over 10.000 years ago we entered the so called „Homocene“, where the temperature and
living conditions got stable. It gave us a stable planet, predictable seasons and reliable weather.

Fort he first time civilazation was possible. But we have just left the homocene behind. We are
now in the age of humans. For the first time we have considering the risk to enstable the
system of the whole planet. When the ice shields are start melting are not cooling anymore
and becoming self warming and that is the most dramatic tipping point imagie. Once you press
the „On“-button it is to late and it becomes irreversible. If one system of the earth system
crosses a tipping point, that make it more likely for other system to cross their tipping point as
well. All the systems are connected like a domino. Large parts of the rain forest are drying out.
Now is the last chance we have to bend the clobal curve.


TAKE WHAT YOU NEED – for free
The exploitation of our planet without any limits is growing. We take more than we need and we never
give anything back. We can see a completely industrialized landscape. Our planet is a generous system.
Everyday we receive natural ressources for free and we use it on a daily basis like water, energy,
materials, food, space or fresh air. We find energy and place it where we need energy to go. The scale
is so big and industrialized that sometimes you can not see the people or the machinery. We are in the
middle of the Anthropocene, so the moment, where the humans are changing everything. We are the
dominante species at the moment.

The proposed current geological epoch in which human are the primary cause of permanent
planetary change. Human becoming the dominat in the world system except for being a
feature.
What if each extraction means less planet? Then our future is self-destruction.


PRODUCE AND CREATE A MARKET TO SELL – as cheap as possible
The exploiation of human. Too many people work for unfair minimum wages. We produce as cheaply
as possible in locations, factories with large numbers of workers.
Manufactured Landscapes
We exported the factories and the production of the goods. Ghent was once a textile city but
now all is gone because we exported everything. It is not a fair system.


CONSUME – as fast as possible
We are all consumers. We make producats that break down quickly. This allows us to sell more. We
dump cheap products very cheap in the market in large number because fast consumption is the
emphasis. We can compate the mega cities, this is not a community, it is a system. We can of course
split the communities completely and of course then you are a completely consumer, but it always ist
he same mass consumption and consuming.


BAD DESIGN QUICKLY BECOMES WASTE – dump waste as cheaply as possible
Our earth becomes a giant wasteland. We dump literally everything in our environment and in every
city we can see the system. What we have to offer our planet is waster, pollution, CO2 and foreign
substances that unbalance nature. Everything is dump on certain places and at certain points and of
course people and dump are fetching each other.

People call themselves fashion victims, but the only true victim to fashion is the climate. What
good does it do if the fashion industry encourage people to throw their sustainable clothes
away when the new sustainable collection arrives? To change something for the better, we
have to create a sustainable lifestyle. To create the tomorrows vintage is the challenging
journey.
The computers are full of special metalls and so on and what are we doing with it? The building industry
is the biggest polluter and we must beomce aware of that. Waste is an important part of the building.
The disrespectful expliotation of our earth causes an ecological catastrophe. We live in a landfill. Every
year the amount of waste is growing and also around the earth. Every launch into the all has to create
a new software.


THE LIMITS OF GROWTH, 1972 – club of rome
The report discussed the possibility of exponential economic and population growth with finite supply
of resources. We have certain limits and we have to do somthing about it. Since the report Limits of
Growth we are increasingly aware oft he fact that our way of life is damaging our planet. What we ask
for on a daily basis is no longer balanced with the capacity of our planet. We have to respect certain
limits. We must think about what materials are for us.

How our life on earth will develop and what kind of future we will be living in. Summary oft he
scientific study oft he the question what will our future look like if the world population keeps
growing and the use of resources continued unabated. Showed different szenarious but all
show that the growth willl stop about 2060, so very soon. There are limits to what our earth
can bear in terms of pollutions or CO2-emissions. Why won’t we avoid collape? Could you
change your cultural and social norms? Yes you could, with much lower energy and material
use. Will you choose acitvities with low energy consumption? No you will not.
OUR FOOTPRINT IS TOO BIG – we consume too much and too fast
Our ecological footprint is indicating that the pressure on our planet is unacceptable high, too high.

The ecological footprint ist he impact of a person or community on the environment expressed
as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources. By means of ecological
footprint analysis, it became possible for the first time to discuss sustainability systematically.
We are looking at our planet and is it albe to follow us and it is comparing our needs.
The red zone (the overshoot) is growing and growing. There is a char where you can see the countries
overshoot days of 2023. Because of the system oft he ecological footprint we can compare the data
and realize what is going on.


OUR CLIMATE IS CHANGING – we are leaving the once save conditions
Our earth is a miracle, an exception in the cosmos but what are we doing with it. Not for us, it is a daily
bin. We are mass dumping CO2. The earth becomes an unpleasant greenhouse. When we do not
change our building, we can not life in this buildings.
„If something can’t going on forever it probably won’t“
In Belgium we are already at the point of 2.0 degrees. After more than 800.000 years, we leave the
safe conditions in which living processes have been able to develop. Our lives themselves are harmful

to this planet. The damage we do changes the plant. As example, if you live near the ice border and
there you see a landscape where water is above the ice, which is not right.
More and more zones are becoming uninhabitable. We can look ahead and anticipate what changes
locally. We are living in a data society, but it is up to you to use the data. Go to the climate data pages
and look at your adress. The people than have to go because there is no possibility to survive there.
Our earth is changing.
What if our earth is no longer supporting our lives? More and more places on earth are becoming
definitely uninhabitable. Like the sinking city in Jakartha. They have built a wall to protect the people
from the water, but now the water is coming from the underground, so every year the city is sinking
1cm. Or houses in US California. One moment to dry and a few month later to much water. Those
places are not expansive so that people can buy it. Weh ad a supportive earth, but now it is changing.

In the last years we have produced new data eg to see the zones that are not livable anymore
Migration from the dry area have already started


Sustainabibliy failed – less bad is not good enough
50 years we thought we could do a lot oft hings, but that was not enough
We thought at least we can follow certain solutions, but that the impact was still negative
We have to find new solutions and how can we move from that red zones tot he green zone and
regenerative development
How can we go t o the green zone


Conclusion – sustainability is not engouh
We produce in a way negative impact
Saying oft he native indians
What if everything we do means more planet? What if our action restore the planet itself?
What is you impact and what is positive impact?
