,The cover art was inspired by Wandy Hernandez, a doula and trainer of
doulas with the Chicago Health Connection. As part of her own training,
Wandy was asked to portray the role of the doula, using art materials. Wandy
immediately thought of a teen mother whom she had accompanied through
labor and birth: “She had been abused sexually and physically throughout her
short life and was terrified of going through childbirth. I saw her as a child
with a broken heart, about to become a mother. My role was to hold her
broken heart together during this frightening time. I held her and told her she
was strong and that she was safe.” Inspired, we asked Wandy if we could
base our cover art on her imagery. She graciously allowed us to do so.
Lynn Hughes, graphic designer, created the art for our cover based on
Wandy’s concept.
