Innovation Proposal

Scholarly Examples of Disruptive Innovations that Improved Healthcare

In today's technological world, there are disruptive innovations that have helped to improve

healthcare. Telehealth was a very needed disruptive healthcare innovation during the Covid-

19 pandemic. According to an article that studied telemedicine, many studies were conducted

to weigh the barriers, facilitators and clinical outcomes with telemedicine and the human

subjects that are a part of the testing. (Rabbani, 2025) The review used bar charts and pie

charts to show during the five year period that the study was being conducted that it did

fluctuate. North America had the highest participants in the study during the trial at 53%.

Remote patient monitoring is another disruptive innovation, examples of this monitoring are

scales, blood pressure machines, diabetic monitors, and first alert systems that send

information digitally from the machine to the patients chart at the providers office and if there

is a discrepancy it can be addressed ASAP. Telemedicine has improved care for chronic

conditions such as heart failure and diabetes. (Bernocchi, 2026)

How the Nurse Innovator Demonstrates a Role in Conceptual Model

A nurse demonstrates the conceptual model role as detective, scientist and manager in many

ways of practice. As a detective the nurse can see a patient that may potentially benefit from

a disruptive innovation. For example a home health patient that has diabetes but does not

have the latest glucose monitoring device, that can decrease the number of times the patient

has to stick themself with a lancet to get a blood sugar reading. The nurse as a manager

would be responsible for educating the patient on the telemonitoring and helping

communication between the patient and provider.

Using Big Data for Innovation

Benefit

Research is benefiting from big data through predictive modeling and improving development

times. Public health is benefiting as well with analyzing disease patterns and being able to

have more virus specific vaccines. Electronic medical records are benefitting because care

providers can see patients' health information in real time and make decisions based upon

that.

Challenge

One of the biggest challenges of big data and having information electronic is security risks.

Healthcare organizations can be hacked, security has to be very important with further use of

big data and evolving technologies.

ANA Code of Ethics to Guide Ethical Use of Big Data

The ANA understands that advanced technology has to be integrated into nursing practice.

New technologies enter, proliferate, and change healthcare at a rapid pace and the scale ranges

from the molecular (e.g., genomics) to the infinite (e.g., machine learning [ML] and augmented
