Introduction
I am currently a Kindergarten teacher who works in one of the largest cities in the DFW
metroplex. Including myself, we have 4 Kindergarten teachers in the building, and we all have
about 0-3 years of experience. My classroom is heavily ESL, and most of my children are
immigrants, mostly from India. Some of them have been here for Pre-K; however, I also have
others who have just arrived and are learning English with me and other outside sources. I have
16 kids in my class, and most of them are girls. I have 10 girls and 6 boys. I have 2 children with
critical educational needs that I also teach.
Unit Introduction
One of the units I was extremely excited to teach and that we are currently covering is
introducing addition and subtraction. This unit is called “Developing Addition and Subtraction
Understanding”. In this unit, we have a total of 13 lessons, 2 additional days for a workshop
where we pick topics the kids may have struggled with and create a more rounded lesson to
supplement, and 2 flex days where we can also reiterate the lessons or catch up on lessons that
were missed due to situations. The lessons center on district-created lessons and those stemming
from an outside curriculum. The lesson I am focusing on in particular is Ten Sly Piranhas -
(determining one less). The standards for this unit are
TEKS: K.2F The student is expected to generate a number that is one more than or one
less than another number up to at least 20.
K.2I compose and decompose numbers up to 10 with objects and pictures
