Question A1

Sport psychology refers to the scientific study of how psychological factors influence
sport performance, exercise participation, and physical activity. It focuses on
understanding how thoughts, emotions, and behaviours affect athletes, as well as
how participation in sport influences psychological well-being (Williams & Krane,
2021:1). Scholars and professionals in this field examine areas such as motivation,
group dynamics, leadership, and mental processes that influence performance
outcomes. In addition, sport psychology involves both research and practical
application, where knowledge is used to improve athletic performance and enhance
the overall sport experience.

Applied sport psychology, on the other hand, is more practical and focuses
specifically on using psychological principles and techniques to improve
performance, participation, and personal development in sport and exercise settings.
It involves working directly with athletes, coaches, and teams to develop mental skills
such as concentration, confidence, stress management, and communication
(Williams & Krane, 2021:1, 15). For example, athletes may use psychological
strategies to control anxiety during competition, improve focus, or enhance team
cohesion.

Applied sport psychology also considers the psychological effects of participating in
sport, such as improved self-esteem, personal growth, and mental health. It includes
interventions like goal setting, imagery, and mental skills training programmes that
are designed to optimise both performance and well-being. Coaches and athletes
increasingly rely on these techniques to gain a competitive advantage and to perform
consistently under pressure (Williams & Krane, 2021:15).

In essence, while sport psychology focuses on understanding behaviour in sport,
applied sport psychology focuses on applying that knowledge in real-world sporting
contexts to improve performance and personal development.
