Lab Summaries
1) Blood pressure is the hydrostatic force blood exerts on vessel walls, measured
clinically as systolic (heart contraction) over diastolic (heart relaxation) pressure in
mmHg. Using a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope, blood pressure is taken by
inflating a cuff to block the brachial artery and listening for Korotkoff sounds as pressure
is released. The first sound marks systolic pressure, while its disappearance indicates
diastolic pressure, providing the blood pressure reading.

2) There are many blood vessels listed in the lab summary sheet that students should
be able to identify as well as the pathway of blood to and from the limbs and organs.

3) Pathway of Blood to and from the Brain:
Right side:
Aorta/Aortic arch → Brachiocephalic trunk → right common carotid 🡪 Right Internal
carotid artery → Anterior/posterior cerebral artery 🡪 Brain (circle of Willis)
AND
Aorta → Brachiocephalic trunk → right subclavian artery 🡪 Right vertebral artery →
Basilar artery 🡪 Posterior cerebral artery 🡪 Posterior communicating artery 🡪 Brain
(circle of Willis)
Left side:
Aorta/aortic arch → Left common carotid artery → Left internal carotid artery 🡪
Anterior/posterior cerebral artery 🡪 Brain (circle of Willis)
OR
Aorta → Left subclavian artery → Left vertebral artery → Basilar artery 🡪 Posterior
cerebral artery 🡪 Posterior communicating artery 🡪 Brain (circle of Willis)

4) Pathway of Blood to and from the Hand:
To the Hand/Digits:
Aorta → Brachiocephalic artery (right side) → Subclavian artery (left side is directly to
subclavian from aorta) → Axillary artery → Brachial artery → Radial artery (lateral side)
or Ulnar artery (medial side) → Superficial and deep palmar arches → Digital arteries
To the heart from the hand/digits:
Digital veins → Superficial palmar venous arch or Deep palmar venous arch → Radial
vein (lateral side) or Ulnar vein (medial side) → Brachial vein → Axillary vein →
Subclavian vein → Brachiocephalic vein → Superior vena cava → Right atrium
Superficial veins of the hand and forearm to the heart:
Dorsal venous arch 🡪 Cephalic (lateral side) or Basilic (medial side) 🡪 Axillary vein 🡪
Subclavian vein 🡪 Brachiocephalic vein 🡪 Superior vena cava 🡪 right atrium
