, CONCEPTUALISING AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION AS THE
CREATION OF CONCEPTS IN PLACE
INTRODUCTION
Philosophy is a way of thinking carefully about life, knowledge, and human actions. It
shapes how people understand the world and how they make decisions in everyday
situations. In education, philosophy influences what is taught, how teaching
happens, and what kind of learner society hopes to develop. It is not only about
ideas, but about practice. Every teacher and learner is guided by certain beliefs,
even if they are not clearly stated.
In South Africa, education is shaped by history, inequality, and cultural diversity. This
makes philosophy important because it helps people question existing systems and
think about better alternatives. African philosophy of education focuses on lived
experiences, community values, and social justice. It shows that knowledge is
shaped by place and culture. This essay explains the meaning and importance of
philosophy in a complex world and explores how place, concepts, and philosophy
are connected in education.
1. PHILOSOPHY AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN A COMPLEX WORLD
1.1 Understanding Philosophy
Philosophy is not only a set of abstract ideas. It is an active process of thinking,
questioning, and making meaning of human life. It deals with questions about truth,
knowledge, values, and reality. In education, philosophy helps people decide what
knowledge matters, how teaching should take place, and what kind of learners
should be developed (Higgs and Waghid 2017).
Philosophy also involves reflection. It asks why things are done in a certain way and
whether those practices are still suitable. This makes philosophy both practical and
critical. It is practical because it influences real decisions in classrooms. It is critical
because it challenges assumptions and encourages deeper thinking.
