NURS FPX 4055 Assessment 1 - Promoting Healthy Eating and Physical
Activity in Low-Income Urban Latino Communities- Health Promotion
Research
Assess Your Chosen Community
The selected community is the Westview neighborhood in Los Angeles,
California. Westview is a predominantly Latino (87%) low-income area with
a population of roughly 24,000. The median household income is $34,700,
with 47% of residents living below the poverty line. The majority are
Spanish-speaking first-generation immigrants. A recent windshield survey
revealed densely populated housing units, a high number of fast-food
restaurants, minimal green space, and poor walkability due to cracked
sidewalks and heavy traffic. A lack of full-service grocery stores limits
residents’ access to affordable fruits and vegetables. The nearest health
clinic is a 45-minute bus ride away, and there is only one public gym, which
charges fees beyond most families’ reach.

Analyze a Population Within Your Community With a Health Concern
or Need
Childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles have become widespread
concerns in Westview. According to the CDC (2023), Hispanic children
aged 2–19 have the highest obesity prevalence of any ethnic group in the
U.S. (26.2%). A 2023 Los Angeles County public health report noted that
33% of school-aged children in Westview were classified as overweight or
obese. This exceeds both national and county-wide averages. In addition,
local school nurses report high rates of prediabetes indicators and poor
physical fitness among elementary and middle school students. Healthy
People 2030 identifies reducing the proportion of children and adolescents
with obesity as a top objective (Office of Disease Prevention and Health
, Promotion [ODPHP], 2023). The primary contributors to the issue are poor
diet quality, food insecurity, lack of access to safe recreation, and limited
health education.
Describe in Detail the Characteristics of a Chosen Community Who
Will Be the Audience
The primary audience is Latino parents of children ages 5 to 13 who attend
public schools in Westview. Many parents work long hours in service or
manual labor jobs, limiting their time to prepare healthy meals or supervise
outdoor play. Many families live in multigenerational households and rely
on SNAP benefits. Language barriers affect their access to nutrition
information and healthcare guidance. A significant number of parents have
limited formal education and may not be familiar with the MyPlate dietary
model or recommended daily physical activity guidelines. However, there is
a strong sense of family cohesion, cultural pride, and a willingness to
participate in community activities when trust is established.
Explain Why the Population Is Predisposed and Can Benefit From a
Health Promotion Educational Plan
Latino children are predisposed to unhealthy weight gain due to a complex
interaction of cultural, environmental, and socioeconomic factors. These
include traditional high-calorie diets, exposure to aggressive fast-food
advertising, unsafe neighborhoods that restrict outdoor play, and systemic
health inequities (Crawford et al., 2021). In Westview, many parents
mistakenly view plumpness in children as a sign of good health. Studies
show that culturally tailored, community-based education programs are
highly effective in improving dietary choices and increasing physical
activity among Latino families. For example, parent-focused interventions
that incorporate culturally relevant cooking, family-based fitness, and
bilingual education have been successful in reducing BMI and improving
food security (Curry et al., 2020). The benefits of a health promotion plan in
this community include improved child health outcomes, increased health
literacy among parents, and reduced healthcare costs long-term.
