Chapter-6: (Introduction to Internet and www)
What is networking?
A group of two or more computers interconnected by any media (Wired or Wireless) is called
networking. The computers within a network can communicate and share the resources like
printer, scanner, etc.
Advantages of Computer Network:
o Fast transmission of data and information.
o Cost of resources is reduced.
o Better Administration.
o Data Sharing
o Hardware sharing
o Software sharing
Types of Networking:
1. Based on Transmission media: Wired and Wireless
2. Based on Network Size: LAN, WAN, MAN & PAN
3. Based on Management method: Peer to Peer and Client-Server
4. Based on Topology: Bus, Star, Tree, Ring and Mesh Topology.
Based on Transmission media: Wired and Wireless
Now we first discuss the networking types based on transmission media.
“Transmission” means the communication of data from one computer to other
computer within network. “Media” means the way or medium by which transmission of
data takes place.
Types of Transmission Media:
(1) Guided media (Wired) (2) Unguided media (Wireless)
