Intro

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society defines interoperability as

“the ability of different information systems, devices and applications (systems) to access,

exchange, integrate and cooperatively use data in a coordinated manner, within and across

organizational, regional and national boundaries, to provide timely and seamless portability of

information and optimize the health of individuals and populations globally" (McBride & Tietze,

2023). These patient data systems and technologies, such as EHR systems, work together to

communicate and share data between providers and their patients. It has become the more

advanced option for many to keep up with and participate in their own health plan with access to

their diagnosis, testing, monitoring, treatment, and more. This essay seeks to explain that despite

the growing field of medical technology systems, there are still issues that arise with every new

promoted advancement.

Summary of the issue

When managed properly, interoperability in healthcare can allow flawless sharing and

exchange of data between healthcare providers and patients. Should any patient systems lack

interoperability many issues can arise such as medical errors, increased costs, safety concerns,

poor quality of care, and more. Lack of interoperability for both providers and patients is a

common issue that can lead to lack of access to patient data. A patient’s new provider could be

using a different electronic health record (EHR) system than that of their patient’s previous

provider and therefore the mutual patient data cannot be shared to both parties. Different

facilities can also be using other systems that use different drug names or test names in their

records that cannot be easily transferred or translated to another system.
