Legislation in business
⁃ Governments regulate business to prevent exploitation of employees and
customers
⁃ Businesses must follow the law to ensure fair and safe treatment of
stakeholders
⁃ Consequences of break-ing legislation: fines, restrictions,
imprisonment
⁃ Industry-specific laws: supermarkets -> food labelling, electronics ->
electronics regulations

Health & safety at work act 1974 (HASAWA)
Purpose - ensure a safe working environment for all staff, including temporary
worker and visitors
Key principles:
⁃ Safe working environment: clean, well-maintained premises, hazes-free,
proper waste management
⁃ Safe entry and exit: clear signage, accessibility for disabled
staff/customers
⁃ Personal protective equipment (PPE): helmets, gloves, eye protection,
high-visibility clothing, safety footwear
⁃ Well-trained employees: adequate training and instructions
⁃ Identify and prevent risks: conduct risk assessments to control hazards
⁃ Appoint a component health & safety officer to enforce safety
measurements
Data protection act 2018
Purpose - controls use of personal information by businesses, organisations, and
government
Principles of data use:
⁃ Used fairly, lawfully, and transparently
⁃ Only for specific, explicit purposes
⁃ Adequate, relevant, and limited to necessary data
⁃ Accurate and up to date
⁃ Retained no longer than necessary
Sensitive data protection:
⁃ Race, religion, political views, health, genetics, sexual orientation,
biometrics, trade union membership
Customer rights:
⁃ Be informed about data usage
⁃ Access and update personal data
⁃ Erase data and restrict processing
⁃ Data profitability and objection rights
