Chapter 44- Digestive and Gastrointestinal Treatment Modalities
Gastrointestinal Intubation
• Intubation- the insertion of a flexible tube into the stomach, or beyond the pylorus into
the duodenum or the jejunum
• Duodenum- the first section of the small intestine
• Jejunum- the second section of the small intestine
• GI intubation performed to:
o Decompress the stomach
o Lavage (flush with water or other fluids) the stomach and remove ingested toxins
or other harmful materials
o Diagnose GI disorders
o Administer tube feedings, fluids, and medications
o Compress a bleeding site
o Aspirate GI contents for analysis
◆ Tube Types
o Gastric Tubes for Decompression, Drainage, Aspiration, and Lavage
▪ Aspiration- removal of substances by suction
▪ Orogastric tube- a large-bore tube inserted through the mouth into the
stomach that contains a wide outlet for removal of gastric contents
▪ Nasogastric (NG) tubes- gastric tubes, introduced through the nose into
the stomach
▪ Decompression- to remove fluid and gas from upper GI tract
o Levin Tube
▪ Has a single lumen and is made of plastic or rubber
▪ Low-intermittent suction (30 to 40 mmHg)
o Salem Sump
▪ A radiopaque (easily seen on x-ray), clear plastic, double lumen gastric
tube
▪ Low-continuous suction (25 mmHg)
o Gastric and Enteric Tubes for Administration of Tube Feedings, Fluids, and
Medications
▪ Smaller bore (5 to 12 Fr)- made for gastric decompression and drainage
▪ Orally or nasally placed feeding tube is for short-term use and should stay
in place for no more than 4 weeks before being replaced with a new tube
▪ Enteric- relating to the intestines
▪ Gastroparesis- reduced stomach motility
▪ Aspiration- inhalation of substances into the airways
