Sexual consent is when a person has the freedom and the capacity to freely
to engage in sexual activity (Sexual Offences Act 2003, cited in O’Donovan, 2
146).
In England and Wales, ‘1 in 5 women’ aged 16-59 have been a victim of som
form of sexual violence since the age of 16 (Ministry of Justice, 2013 cited in
Richards and Reid, 2017, p. 131). Similarly, in the US, ‘1 in 5 women’ and ‘1
men’ report rape at some point in their lives (Black et al., 2011 cited in Richard
Reid, 2017, p. 131).
However, due to general lack of education and awareness on consent, consen
not always clear, resulting in sexual assault especially when the perpetrator be
that consent was implied (The Open University, 2018).
