Question: Aggressive and violent contact crimes remain a challenge in South
Africa. Identify and discuss the three (3) types of robbers (without the use of a
diagram).
(25 Marks)

1. Introduction

Aggressive and violent contact crimes remain one of the most serious threats to public
safety in South Africa. Among these crimes, robbery is particularly concerning because
it combines theft with violence or the threat of violence against victims. Robbery
often results in serious physical injury, psychological trauma, and financial loss.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), robbery-related crimes such as
robbery with aggravating circumstances, armed robbery, and house robbery
remain prevalent across the country.

Criminologists classify offenders involved in robbery into different categories to better
understand their behaviour, motives, and level of organisation. Understanding these
categories assists law enforcement agencies and crime prevention specialists in
developing targeted strategies to combat robbery. One commonly used classification
identifies three main types of robbers, namely professional robbers, opportunistic
robbers, and drug-addicted (or compulsive) robbers. Each type differs in terms of
planning, motivation, and the degree of violence used during the commission of the
crime.

2. Professional Robbers

Professional robbers are individuals or organised groups who commit robbery as a
primary source of income. These offenders are usually highly organised, experienced,
and strategic in the way they carry out their criminal activities.
