Psychological Disorders
The way people perceive problems have an influence on how we attempt to resolve it. In
the past, human beings thought that were proofs of extraordinary forces. People used to treat the
mental cases badly by caging them, or violent therapies like genital mutilations removing teeth,
beatings, transfusion of animal blood among others. In certain places, mistreatments for the
mental cases consisted of chaining people to beds or taking them to places where they can be
eaten by wild animals. Reformists like Philippe Pinel did not agree to these brutal acts. They
claimed that madness is not demon possession but an illness of the mind brought about by severe
inhumane conditions as well as stress.
The reformists also said that curing this sickness include necessitates moral treatment by
boosting the sick person's spirits by not chaining them and engaging them in conversations.
Philippe together with his colleagues worked to substitute brutal treatment of the mental cases
with isolation with activities, including an environment with sunshine and clean air. Therefore
the World Health Organization has initiated reform that aspires to change hospitals into patient-
friendly and humanitarian places with minimum restraint (Barlow, 2014). Therefore,
psychological disorder is a normal illness and should be taken just like any other illness by
treating it with care and a lot of respect so that people ailing from it can feel like they are part
