QUESTION 1

1.1 With reference to theory as well as the case study, describe the Innovation
Hub.

The Innovation Hub is a science and technology park that functions as a business
incubator and cluster environment aimed at supporting innovative, knowledge-based
enterprises in South Africa.

According to Menon and Malik (2016), small-business incubation is a flexible
combination of business development processes, infrastructure and people designed to
nurture small businesses during their vulnerable early stages. The Innovation Hub fits
this definition because it provides entrepreneurs with access to business support,
finance, networking opportunities, expertise and infrastructure (Chapter 16.5).

The Innovation Hub is described as a public-private partnership (PPP) incubator that
promotes innovation and competitiveness among high-tech entrepreneurs (Chapter
16.5.2). It creates a unique space where entrepreneurs, researchers, academics and
venture capitalists can meet, network and commercialise technological innovations.

In the case study, Expertron joined the Innovation Hub and benefited from an
entrepreneurship intervention designed to accelerate the growth of innovative

, knowledge-based enterprises, confirming its role as a technology-focused incubator and
cluster.

1.2 What are the advantages that Expertron has experienced by being part of the
Innovation Hub?

1. Access to Partnerships

The Innovation Hub facilitated a partnership between Expertron and Grintek, a major
player in defense, electronics and telecommunications. This aligns with incubation
theory which states that incubators provide access to networks and industry
stakeholders (Chapter 16.5).

2. Networking and Idea Sharing

Clusters allow face-to-face interaction and information sharing (Porter, 1998; Chapter
16.6.1). Being near other entrepreneurs enabled Expertron to share ideas and
collaborate, enhancing innovation.

3. Commercialisation Support

The case states that Expertron was assisted to commercialise technological
innovations. Incubators help businesses move from product development to market
entry by providing intellectual property support, market development and business
mentoring (Chapter 16.5.1).

4. Increased Credibility and Visibility
