Section A: Content-based questions

Question 1

1.1 In Unit 1, you were introduced to the notion of intelligibility. In your own
words, explain what this concept means. Do not copy the explanation used in the
study guide or any other source; otherwise, you will be penalised.

1.1 Intelligibility

Intelligibility refers to how clearly language is understood by an audience, regardless of
the speaker’s accent or background. In this module, intelligibility is not about speaking
“perfect” English, but about using language in a way that allows meaning to be easily
recognised and interpreted by listeners or readers. This means adjusting language
choices such as vocabulary, sentence structure, and clarity, so that communication is
effective for a specific audience. In the South African context, intelligibility is especially
important because people communicate across many languages, cultures, and accents,
and understanding meaning is more important than sounding like a native speaker
(Unit 1, section 4.2).
