All academic disciplines worked independently of each other. PDU3701 Assignment 03 – 2026

Question 1
1.1 (a) Hermeneutics and Truth
Hermeneutics is the philosophical study of interpretation and
understanding. Traditionally, hermeneutics focused on interpreting
biblical texts and legal documents. However, modern hermeneutics,
especially through thinkers like Hans-Georg Gadamer and Martin
Heidegger, expanded the concept to include the interpretation of
human experience, language, history, and meaning itself.
My understanding of hermeneutics and truth is that truth is not simply
an objective fact that exists independently of human beings. Rather,
truth emerges through interpretation. Gadamer argues that
understanding is always influenced by our historical and cultural
background. We approach every text, situation, or conversation with
prior assumptions, which he calls “prejudices” (not negative bias, but
pre-understanding). These pre-understandings shape how we interpret
meaning.
Truth, therefore, is not discovered mechanically; it unfolds through
dialogue. Gadamer speaks of the “fusion of horizons,” meaning that
understanding happens when our own perspective meets the
perspective of another person or text. Truth becomes relational and
dialogical rather than purely scientific or measurable.
In my view, hermeneutics challenges the idea that truth in education is
fixed and absolute. Instead, it suggests that knowledge grows through

, engagement, questioning, and interpretation. Truth is dynamic, not
static. This understanding is powerful because it recognises that
learners are not empty vessels receiving facts but participants in
meaning-making processes.
Thus, hermeneutics and truth teach us that understanding requires
openness, dialogue, reflection, and humility. It reminds educators that
learning is not only about correct answers but about deep
understanding.

1.1 (b) Hermeneutics and Education
When applied to education, hermeneutics emphasises interpretation,
dialogue, and lived experience. Education becomes more than the
transmission of information; it becomes a process of shared
understanding between teacher and learner.
From a hermeneutical perspective, teaching is not merely delivering
content. Instead, it is facilitating understanding. Teachers must
recognise that learners interpret information differently based on their
backgrounds, cultures, languages, and experiences. This aligns strongly
with contexts like African education systems, where diverse cultural
identities influence how knowledge is understood.
Hermeneutics in education means:
 Learning through dialogue.
 Valuing learners’ prior knowledge.
 Recognising cultural and historical influences.
 Encouraging critical reflection.
