The Mau Mau movement, also known as the Mau Mau Uprising (1952–1960), was a
freedom struggle in Kenya against British colonial rule. It was mainly led by members of the
Kikuyu community who were protesting the loss of their land, unfair treatment, and lack of
political rights.
The fighters organized themselves in forests, especially in Central Kenya, and used guerrilla
warfare to resist the colonial government. One of the most famous leaders was Dedan
Kimathi, who symbolized bravery and resistance. Although Jomo Kenyatta was not a Mau
Mau fighter, he was wrongly accused and imprisoned because of the movement.
The British government responded with force, declaring a state of emergency, arresting many
people, and placing others in detention camps. Many Kenyans suffered during this period, but
the struggle helped weaken colonial control.
The Mau Mau movement played a major role in Kenya’s fight for independence, which was
achieved in 1963. Today, the Mau Mau fighters are remembered as heroes who sacrificed for
freedom and self-rule.
