Scholarly Examples of Disruptive Innovations that Improved Healthcare
A disruptive innovation that has allowed access to medicine from home is telehealth. Telehealth
has allowed providers easy access to manage and monitor their patients’ recovery from their homes
(Haleem et al., 2021). Healthcare providers can access their patients for various issues and diagnose
and treat them via telehealth. Telehealth also allows patients to schedule appointments and diagnostic
testing from the comfort of their homes. Telehealth is also cost-effective. Other benefits of telehealth
are that patients do not have to take off work to go to appointments or pay extra costs for childcare.
Telehealth is also beneficial for immunocompromised individuals, allowing them the option not to be
around others in a packed waiting room, which decreases their chances of infection. Individuals who
lack reliable transportation also benefit by using telehealth; they can still receive the care they need
without stressing over how they will get to the doctor. Telehealth also allows providers to collaborate
on patient care without being in the same room (Haleem et al., 2021). The providers can view and
access records like imaging, labs, medications, etc., which allows the provider to provide treatment
faster.
Robotic surgery is another disruptive innovation intended to decrease a patient’s mortality by
increasing quality of life (Tan et al., 2016). The first robotic surgery was a stereotactic brain biopsy
performed in 1985 at Stanford University in California (NIH.gov). This surgery paved the way for
more operative procedures using robotics. Innovations like robotic surgery have contributed to better
surgery outcomes and increased patients’ quality of life (Tan et al., 2016). Providers have found that
some benefits of using robots for surgery are unfailing performance, stability, minor incision, and user-

friendliness. Furthermore, utilizing robotic surgery has also decreased the amount of blood loss in
surgery.
How the Nurse Innovator Demonstrates a Role in Conceptual Model
The nurse innovator can demonstrate the nurse's role as a manager of the healing environment
by engaging in social, cultural, political, social justice, and economic issues (Western Governors
University, 2021)—an example being the nurse innovator becoming the nurse manager for the cardiac
step-down unit. There has been an increase in the number of patients with English as a second
language. During the shift huddle, the direct care staff voiced concerns regarding the patient translators
not always being available when the unit needs them. Therefore, the nurse manager analyzes the
allotted budget for the unit and purchases four tablets with translation capabilities for various
languages. The plan is to have enough devices to prevent patient care from being delayed. The nurse
manager knows the devices are in higher demand during patient admissions and discharges, so she has
allocated two tablets to be designated for that. However, due to its size, the step-down unit requires
more tablets, so the nurse manager has provided leadership with evidence-based practice on the benefits
of tablets for translation usage and the importance of adequate communication between nurses and
patients. Also, morale is boosted when staff have access to adequate supplies they need to care for
patients, such as tablets. Leadership agreed and allocated for two more tablets to be purchased, and in
doing so, patient satisfaction increased, patient safety goals were met, and there was a boost in staff
morale.
