Scholarly Examples of Disruptive Innovations that Improved Healthcare

There are many examples of disruptive innovation examples that come to mind regarding

improvement in healthcare. One of those examples includes the development of telehealth. Telehealth

enabled the use of digital information and communication technologies, such as computers and mobile

devices, allowing remote access to healthcare services and facilitating the management of patients'

healthcare. (Madsen, Poropatich, & Koehlmoos, 2023) This innovation has made a huge impact on

healthcare and patient outcomes. Telehealth originated in the 1980s for military use to enhance medical

operational support and has only become increasingly more prevalent, especially after the COVID-19

pandemic. (Maden, et. al., 2023)

An additional example of a disruptive innovation is a tool known as the Queensland

Occupational Violence Patient Risk Assessment Tool (QOVPRAO). Based in Brisbane, one of their

nurses developed this tool. It is an occupational violence risk assessment tool for Emergency

Departments that has decreased the percentage of violent incidences by 20%. (Cabilan, 2023) This tool

is a great example of how nurses are the prime candidates to be innovators as they are essentially the

eyes and ears of patient care. Cabilan further explains the tool as an electronic assessment and tracking

process, which begins at triage and is designed to be completed within half an hour of a patient

presenting to the ED. (2023)

The Nurse Innovator can demonstrate the role of “Nurse as a Scientist” in the WGU Nursing

Programs Conceptual Model in many ways. One example of developing tools to decrease the amount of

hospital-acquired central line blood infections (CLABSIs) and catheter-associated urinary tract

infections (CAUTIs) in a hospital unit. The nurse innovator would begin by identifying an increase in

incidents of these infections on the unit and/or in the hospital in which they work in. They would then
