Service Line for Testing and Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections via Mobile

Clinic

Proposed Nursing Service Idea
The proposed nursing service line is to create a clinic that is a mobile clinic that offers

testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to residents of Monterey County,

with a target population of young adults aged 18-30. To successfully operate this mobile clinic,

there will need to be at least two registered nurses and one nurse practitioner (two at most). This

would be a nurse-led mobile clinic as the registered nurse and advanced registered nurse would

be responsible for scheduling, billing, specimen collection, and medication administration. In

California, nurse practitioners are allowed to practice independently under certain requirements

made by the California Board of Registered Nursing (MIEC, Nurse Practitioner Expanded Scope

of Practice in California, 2023), and their responsibility would be ordering STI screening and

treatment. The effective leadership skills required to successfully develop and run this service are

based on clear communication, establishing goals, and outcomes.

Importance
The rise of sexually transmitted infections is a growing concern in the United States.

Most data and trends focus solely on chlamydia and gonorrhea because they are the two most

common STIs. According to the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps website for Monterey

County, 511.9 new cases of chlamydia alone were diagnosed per 100,000 in 2022, compared to

the start of the study in 2007, which was 282 cases per 100,000 people. No current data has been

recorded, but that number has been steadily rising since the year 2020 (County Health Rankings

& Roadmaps, Monterey County, 2025). By developing this nurse-led service line, there is an

opportunity to offer testing and treatment to help prevent the spread of STIs and offer education

to the community in the process.
