Service Line for Mobile Sexually Transmitted Infections Clinic
Proposed Nursing Service Idea
According to research, there are more than 20 million estimated new sexually transmitted
infection cases in the United States each year, and the rates are increasing. Bacterial STDs are
comprised of three reportable sexually transmitted infections in Florida: chlamydia, gonorrhea,
and syphilis. (Healthy People 2030, n.d).
In 2023, the rate per 100,000 Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) in
Manatee County was 583.3 compared to Florida at 788.2. Manatee County statistics also suggest
that STIs affect both men and women, but in most cases, other health issues can be more severe
in women. If a pregnant woman has an STD, it can cause serious health problems, including
miscarriage and stillbirth. Many STIs are preventable and are easy to treat; however, many
people do not seek treatment or preventative care due to a lack of access to healthcare or lack of
health insurance. According to the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County, the age
group most commonly affected by Sexually Transmitted Infections is 15-24 years old (Florida
Department of Health, n.d). Similarly, In the united states in 2023, data shows that 48.2% of
reported cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea were among adolescents and young adults aged 15–
24 years and 32.4% of all cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea were among non-Hispanic Black or
African American persons, even though they made up only 12.6% of the US population (Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024). According to the National Institute of Health, Rates
of reported cases of gonorrhea among females aged 15 to 24 years increased by 14.3% from
2016 to 2017 and by 24.1% from 2013 to 2017. Concurrently, rates of gonorrhea among males

The nursing service line that I am proposing is to start creating a mobile STI clinic to diagnose,
treat, and offer preventive care to individuals with or at high risk for sexually transmitted
infections. My mobile STI clinic would allow low-income or rural populations with limited
access to healthcare to have an equal opportunity to receive affordable services. The purpose of a
mobile clinic would be to visit community centers, colleges, and other areas within the
community to deliver services such as diagnostic testing, counseling, and treatment for STIs.
Registered nurses would run the mobile clinic; however, there would be an APRN
under the guidance of a physician available to complete exams, order diagnostic tests
testing, and prescribing treatment. The role of the registered nurse would be to triage the patients,
coordinate care between providers, ensure adequate supplies are available, collect specimens for
testing, administer medication, and educate about STD prevention. There would be a team of
healthcare providers, including the RN, APRN, the physician, and a social worker. The
registered nurses must have practical communication skills, the ability to multitask, and assist in
facilitating treatment plans for each patient.
