Pre-lab Questions
1. What is the purpose of Lab 8? What concepts is it trying to convey to a microbiology
student?
The purpose of Lab 8 is to identify microorganisms by the different methods we
have learned so far.
2. What is the purpose of designing a dichotomous key? How will it be utilized in this lab?
The purpose of a dichotomous key is like a step-by-step guide. For example, in
identifying the unknown organism. It will be utilized to narrow down possible
microbes.

3. Using a reputable source online, describe how the Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (FTM)
test works. Provide enough elaboration that you clearly demonstrate your knowledge
of this test.
FTM is used to show how bacteria require oxygen. The way it works is by creating a
high concentration of oxygen at the top of the tube, perfect for obligate aerobes
(bacteria that need oxygen). In the middle of the tube, a low oxygen concentration
is needed for microaerophiles (Bacteria that require low oxygen). At the bottom of
the tube, no oxygen is needed for obligate anaerobes (bacteria that can not
handle oxygen). The growth in the tube shows the oxygen preference for
microorganisms.

4. Would you consider this a selective or differential medium?
Differential media because it differentiates bacteria based on oxygen requirements
and availability.

5. Describe how an obligate aerobe would grow in an FTM Tube. What about a facultative
anaerobe?
An obligate aerobe grows only at the top, where the most oxygen is. A facultative
anaerobe grows all throughout the tube, but is more intense at the top because
oxygen is present.
