1.1 Types of assessment
1.1.1 Baseline assessment
Is the assessment that takes place in the beginning of the process, to measure
the quality of education by comparing their baseline assessment of learner with
their performance. It is used to establish what the learners already know and
enables the teacher with information regarding the learner’s level of development
and learning and where to improve before continuing with a lesson. Teachers are
able to plan new activities to help boost learners existing knowledge.
1.1.2 Formative assessment
Monitors and supports the process of the teaching and learning. It is used for
information purposes about the quality of teaching and learning and guide them to
improve teaching and learning. It is a continuous process which happens during a
lesson process. It allows teachers to make any certain changes which will suit
learner’s needs.
1.1.3 Summative assessment
Results in reporting the overall report on learner’s performances after assessments
activities have been conducted. There are variety of forms that take place which
are tests, assignments and examinations. Summative assessments proves the
amount and quality of learning a learner achieved at the conclusion of a defined
instructional period and determine if they have met the learning outcomes and
requirements to be promoted.
1.1.4 Diagnostic assessment
Assessment implied but not yet stated openly in all observations. The teacher
therefore focuses on identifying learning difficulties learners come across to be able
to provide strict guidance and active programmes which will be appropriate to help
learners where they are in need. It is used to to identify the nature and causes of
barriers to learning that may be experiences by individual learners to enable the
teacher to make adjustments to accommodate these learners prior to instruction.
1.1.5 Recognition of prior learning assessment
Takes place in different ways
-It has to do with portability of formal learning between institutions of
learning(similar modules completed at another institution).
-When a learner seeks recognition for experiential learning

1.2.1 Examination
Examinations are very structured and allow teachers to assess all learners in the
same way at the same time. Examinations are useful if the content area is of a
theoretical nature and you want evidence of the learner’s factual knowledge or
comprehension or recall skills. Examination of atleast 60 minutes each will be
administered twice a year as part of the internal examination timetable of the
school. The examination will comprehensively address the knowledge and skills
covered up to time of the examination
