,1. Introduction

Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) play a significant role in economic
development, employment creation, and poverty alleviation in developing countries. In Africa,
technological advancements, demographic shifts, and the growth of mobile and internet
penetration have transformed the marketing environment. This assignment analyses these
developments in relation to a selected SME in my neighborhood. The discussion focuses on
technological progress in Africa, population implications, and the marketing implications of
growing mobile and internet access. Recommendations are provided on how the selected SME
can capitalize on these developments within its marketing strategy.

2. Background of the Selected SME

The selected SME is Sunrise Bakery, a small, family-owned bakery located in my neighborhood.
The business was established in 2019 and specializes in freshly baked bread, cakes, mandazis,
and customized celebration cakes. The bakery employs six staff members and serves walk-in
customers from the surrounding residential area and nearby schools.

Sunrise Bakery primarily relies on word-of-mouth marketing and physical signage to attract
customers. Orders for customized cakes are mainly placed through phone calls or in-person
visits. The business currently has a WhatsApp number for orders but does not have a formal
website or structured social media marketing strategy. The owner has expressed interest in
expanding the customer base but faces challenges in understanding how digital tools can
support marketing growth.

3. Technological Progress in Africa

Africa has experienced significant technological progress over the past two decades, particularly
in mobile technology and internet access. According to the International Telecommunication
Union (2023), internet penetration in Africa has increased substantially due to improved
infrastructure and affordable smartphones. Mobile technology has become the primary means
of internet access, with mobile broadband subscriptions continuing to rise.

The expansion of mobile money platforms such as M-Pesa has revolutionized financial
transactions in many African countries by improving financial inclusion. Furthermore, the growth

, of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have transformed
communication, advertising, and consumer engagement.

Technological progress in Africa has also been driven by digital entrepreneurship, e-commerce
platforms, and improved logistics systems. These developments have enabled SMEs to access
broader markets, reduce transaction costs, and improve customer engagement (Chaffey & Ellis-
Chadwick, 2019).

4. Infusing Technological Progress into the SME

Sunrise Bakery can integrate technological progress into its operations by adopting digital
marketing tools and mobile-based transaction systems. Firstly, the bakery can formalize its
presence on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to showcase its products
visually. High-quality images of cakes and daily specials can increase customer engagement
and attract new clients beyond the immediate neighborhood.

Secondly, the bakery can fully integrate mobile payment systems such as M-Pesa to make
transactions more convenient for customers. Digital payment options enhance customer
satisfaction and improve financial record keeping.

Thirdly, the bakery can use WhatsApp Business to automate responses, display a product
catalogue, and manage customer orders efficiently. This would streamline communication and
reduce the time spent responding to repetitive inquiries.

5. Population Implications Relating to Marketing Structure

Africa has one of the youngest and fastest-growing populations globally. According to the United
Nations (2022), a significant proportion of Africa’s population is under the age of 25. This
youthful demographic is highly receptive to digital communication, social media engagement,
and online purchasing behavior.

Urbanization is also increasing rapidly, leading to higher population density in cities and towns.
This shift influences consumer preferences, purchasing power, and lifestyle patterns. As income
levels gradually improve in urban areas, consumers demand convenience, quality, and
personalized services.
