A1: Tier 1 Intervention
Tier 1 is a whole class instruction using evidence-based, general education strategies. (Textbook) This
focuses on grade level / subject matter/behavior standards using “effective large and small group instructional
strategies” (USF, pg.4) This is a universal support for the whole class. A learning support appropriate for tier 1
would be mixed ability groups. This would have students of multiple learning levels together in table groups.
A2: Tier 1 Support for Student’s Need
A learning need that can be present and use mixed ability grouping is English language learners. Having
EL students mixed in groups can be helpful for them and not so overwhelming when interacting with a smaller
amount of students. A smaller group gives the students an opportunity to work with, learn from, and help each
other. With multiple small groups in the classroom, the teacher and other aides can roam around and help
individual groups.
B1: Tier 2 Intervention
Tier 2 is a small group intervention provided to students in addition to tier 1 support, focusing on areas
of need. These interventions are designed to help target specific needs that may not be met in the whole group
tier 1. It will typically consist of a small group of students all needing the same targeted area, whether it be
